Berwick Academy, a PK through PG independent Day school in southern Maine is looking for a full-time Music teacher to join our PK-PG Visual and Performing Arts Program.  The Lower School & Middle School Music Teacher is a full-time faculty position and reports directly to the Chair of the Performing Arts Department.  

Qualified candidates will show strong evidence of exceptional teaching in general music as well as excellent classroom management skills..  Experience and expertise with either choral music or theater will also be attractive qualifications. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills are required to work in a cross-divisional position.  A keen understanding of the social/emotional needs of Lower and Middle School students as well as a collaborative teaching style are also hallmarks of a successful candidate.

Qualifications:

Education:  Minimum Bachelor’s in Music Education or equivalent (Master’s in Music Education strongly preferred)  Orff, Kodaly or equivalent certification highly desired.
 
Experience:  PK - 8 Classroom experience, PK - 4 General Music education knowledge and experience, PK - 8 choral literature and conducting, PK - 8 musical theater & direction, Piano fluency, Ability to develop rapport with students, Computer / technology literacy and proficiency

Responsibilities:

• Develop and teach a program of music instruction in the Lower School (Pre-K through Grade 4) by following the curriculum and using the resources available at each grade level and collaborate with the Performing Arts Department to develop a continuity of music instruction from Pre-K through 12th grade.
• Plan, organize and function as Artistic and Musical Director for all Lower School music programs in cooperation with the Director of the Lower School and the Director of Visual and Performing Arts
• Assist in Lower School Assemblies by planning and leading music as appropriate
• Model and develop good vocal technique as appropriate for all ages while introducing and developing student knowledge of musical terminology, theory, and notation
• Teach Middle School (Grade 5 - 8) Chorus
• Serve as Music Director for the Middle School Musical
• Assist in managing the April Private Music Recitals
• Attend professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops in order to maintain and improve professional competence.
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis.
